President of the Republic of Serbia, Mr. Boris Tadić The Government of the Republic of Serbia The Prime Minister of Republic of Serbia, Dr Mirko Cvetković Minister of Education, Dr Žarko Obradović PETITION We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned by a recent announcement made by the Ministry of Education (hereinafter: Ministry) regarding the reduction of funds for educational programs run by the Petnica Science Center (PSC). This decrease in funding is certain to have a negative effect on the well-being of PSC, and in turn on the future of science education in Serbia. On this account, we appeal to you. By signing the petition, we ask for the following: 1. That the Ministry approves the funds necesarry to continue the center's operation in the short term 2. That a long term funding plan is established between the Ministry and PSC, and a contract between these two parties signed to ensure that the plan is honored Petnica Science Center is a unique organization in the Republic of Serbia and in southeastern Europe in its broad mission to inform, educate and stimulate the youth of the country. A wide variety of programs are available at PSC comprising 140 workshops, seminars, courses and educational camps every year, in more then 20 fields fields ranging from Astronomy to Geology to Linguistincs and Antropology. Over 2000 gifted students from Serbia and abroad participate each year and in its 25 years of existence PSC has hosted approximately 50 000 young scientists. Students attending Petnica Science Center frequently acquire a greater depth and breadth of knowledge than they are able to from their own elementary and high-schools.
